Global Issues

Pupils build on what they have learnt at national 5 and continue to study the topics of Climate Change and Development and Health. In the Climate Change unit learners will build on prior learning and investigate the causes and imapct of climate change and how groups of people can try and slow down process of climate change. Health will build pupils knowledge of health issues that face the developing world and their ability to cope with these issues. Global Issues will be taught through an the use of case studies and pupils will be encouraged to use named examples to show their depth of understanding.

Development and Health

– Differences in Levels of Development Between  Developing Countries â€“ Case study of differences between an Developing Country, examples of Developing Countries and the reason for their relative wealth and/or poverty

 

– Development Indicators – Indicators which could be used to

produce a composite index, Explain how the indicators illustrate a country’s level of development, Explain why certain indicators may not give a true representation of the true quality of life in an area.

 

Disease – Detailed knowledge of one water related disease (malaria, cholera or bilharzia/schistosomiasis)

Economic Indicators – these indicators relate to money and employment

 

Gross Domestic Product â€“ The value of all goods and services produced in  a country

 

Human Development Index – A composite index based on adult literacy rate, average life expectancy and average income adjusted to spending power

 

Newly Industrialised Country – A country in which the GDP from industry exceeds one third of the total GDP

 

Oral Hydration Therapy– A cheap way to treat dehydration and diarrhoea with a solution of water, salt and sugar

 

Physical/environmental Factors – Natural factors such as climate, landscape, drainage

 

Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI) – Another composite measure of development based on adult literacy rates, average life expectancy and infant mortality rate
